The development of Nonoti Beach has been given the go ahead, sparking what should serve as a catalyst to leverage private sector investment.

Environmental authorisation for the development was granted August by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs following a successful environmental impact assessment.

The project has been in the pipeline since 2018 and will see significant changes to the previously undeveloped land between Blythedale and Zinkwazi.

Phase 1 is set to begin in September, and once the beach opens the pressure on other North Coast beaches may be eased.

“It is anticipated that the Nonoti development will establish the area as an important location for tourism and boost business and residential value,” said municipal spokesperson, Sipho Mkhize.

The first phase will include the construction of a parking area, ablution facilities, water and sanitation, braai facilities, street lighting and landscaping.

Phase 2 is planned to begin immediately after completion of phase 1 and will include the construction of a main access road, main electricity supply, street lighting and a pedestrian walkway along the access road. Informal traders kiosks will also be included. No completion date for phase 1 has been provided.

Also planned for future phases is a cycle and skateboard track, an outdoor amphitheater, swimming pool and lifeguard tower.

The cost of both phases will come to R31.3-million.
