FAIRLAWN — Lumen Nation owner Tom Rafferty has been involved in various aspects of the lighting industry for the past 31 years. In 2016, he brought that experience under one roof when he opened a 4,800-square-foot full-service lighting showroom at 4242 Portage Street N.W in North Canton. In June 2021, Rafferty and his staff of 13 expanded again, opening a 6,600-square-foot store at 3900 Medina Road in the Montrose Center Plaza. “I started in the lighting industry when I was in high school, working at a lighting store building chandeliers,” Rafferty said. “I eventually moved into sales and management, but I have done everything from service to deliveries.” That experience, along with attention to customer service and a wide array of products, is what sets Lumen Nation apart from both big box stores and other lighting showrooms, Rafferty said. “Number one is customer service — we really are lighting experts,” he said. “We ask [customers] a lot of questions. We really want to give them what they want. We don’t sell lights just to sell lights.” The quality of Lumen Nation’s products also stands apart, he added, stating the company does not make short cuts to meet a price point like most national chains. The two Lumen Nation showrooms offer interior and exterior light fixtures, ceiling fans, lamps, furniture and accessories, landscape lighting, lamp shades, chandeliers and more, Rafferty said. On-site consultation and installation and lamp repair services also are available. Rafferty said Lumen Nation customers range from local builders and retailers to homeowners building a new house or remodeling their current home. “Our customers range from someone doing a whole house to someone who is just looking for a weird light bulb,” he said. “Many of our customers just want to update — changing the lights in a room is an easy way to really change the look of a room.” Lumen Nation also offers consultation services to improve lighting — both in terms of style or effect — in the customer’s home. Landscape lighting, for example, is an area of growing interest, Rafferty said. “A lot of times customers don’t know exactly what they want so we go to the house, figure out everything they need and do the installation,” he said. Rafferty added Lumen Nation offers a wide price range of products and adheres to manufacturers minimum advertised pricing, but does offer discounts on larger jobs such as new home construction projects. Both Lumen Nation locations are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Fairlawn location is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the North Canton store is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We try to make lighting easy for people,” Rafferty said. “Even when it comes to light bulbs. We want to provide education on every lighting issue.” For more information about the business, visit www.lumen-nation.com.
