BATAVIA — There should be some more progress in October on the Park Road construction project that’s been going on for a few months the Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation noted during a meeting Thursday.

Reconstruction work has been underway on Park Road since the beginning of summer. Work has focusing on roadway reconstruction, including excavation and removal of the existing roadbed, curb work, street lighting, sidewalks and paving.

“It’s probably 80% complete. We expect substantial completion by Oct. 17 and hopefully we’ll have two-way traffic on the street in just two to three weeks,” WROTB President and CEO Henry Wojtaszek said. “The street lights and street poles will be delivered next week, we’re told.”

Wojtaszek estimated it would take a couple of weeks to make sure everything gets installed.

“We’re looking forward to a completed, beautiful project,” he said.

The general contractor on the project is CATCO. CATCO and subcontractors will do the work, Wojtaszek said.

Batavia Downs patrons and employees can no longer park in the Kmart parking lot on Lewiston Road at Park Road, Wojtaszek noted.

“We had a lease with the company (Benderson Development). We have a very good relationship with them, but they have some projects going within their property,” he said. “We leased it for the purpose of the concerts ... to make sure we had adequate parking, but e have adequate parking for the events at Batavia Downs.”

Wojtaszek said WROTB let Batavia Downs patrons and employees know it no longer has the lease with Benderson.

“Should we need a further arrangement with them for concerts over the summertime, I’ve had very good conversations with the company and we intend to enter into an agreement to make sure that we have parking for whatever events we have.”

In the meantime, patrons and employees have been put on notice that, for now, they will park at their own risk if they park in the Kmart lot.
