After more than a year of renovation, the Genesee Valley Park pool this week reopened to the public.

The $2.2 million renovation project at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex included a new pool surface, deck, fence, lifeguard chairs, starting blocks, slide, lighting and an upgraded plaza entrance. The pool was closed last summer as well because of the project.

Eric Rose, Rochester's director of community athletics, said that the planned mid-summer opening was delayed by several weeks so staff could address a pool chemical problem that had created issues with visibility in the water.

The Olympic-sized pool at 131 Elmwood Ave. is popular with lap swimmers and families looking to beat the heat. It is the lone outdoor public swimming pool operated by the City of Rochester. The current pool opened in 1977 as part of a $1 million overhaul of the complex. It replaced the park's original pool within the park, which initially opened in the 1930s.

The pool, operated by the city of Rochester, will remain open through Labor Day. The pool is open weekdays, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. From 5 to 6 p.m., the entire pool is designated for lap swimmers. Otherwise, four lanes are typically reserved for lap swimmers and swim lessons.

Typically, swimmers pay a fee to enter the pool complex, but currently admission will be free, according to city officials.
